Book Recommendations
Perhaps this list is far from comprehensive on books that have marked my thoughts and behaviors. If it was under the purpose of understanding my choices and desires it would be best to point out the several many books on development and passion; As a Man thinked of James Allen for example, or that Logics book we learned about in high school. But today I aim to give you a list of books that have made me cried to the point when I recognized book characters in people I meet in life. A beautiful blue-eyed girl from Jordan selling postcards at 1 euro, was exactly how I picture the girl of “Sold” by Patricia McCormick. This short list shows my passion to economic development and inequality for which the story of Masechaba in Period Pain or Mariam in A Thousand Splendid Suns are so relevant. If at any point I feel sad or lonely, maybe I lack of empathy, I go through the story of Pancho in Dónde Habitan los Ángeles. In summary, this short book list is not only a list of books that have marked my thoughts or desires but are books that live within me, that make me feel happiness, sorrow, pain, excitement as if I could understand other people’s lives or recognize them when I find a soul who has suffered as the main characters did.
Sold - Patricia McCormick

I read this book when I was 17 as part of my High School required readings. Never would I have thought the girl I met many years later would have a similar look in the mountains of Jordan.
A Thousand Splendid Suns- Khaled Hosseini

When I first came to China I had a best friend from Pakistan. I would love to debate with him and understand his points of view on sustainability (which we don’t agree). The perspective of women and marriage in their culture (the Southeast region) is very different from what I think love and marriage is. This book was very interesting to read but moreso, educating.
Period Pain – Kopano Matlwa

Growing up was very difficult to talk about ‘female issues’ even with my mom. Going to the gynecologist, how to put on a pad, and let’s not discuss about sex. I guess this novel showed me that the culture in Zimbabwe is just as restrictive (if not more). This book was a recommendation of a friend who suffered with great period pains, I think about medical access and healthcare as a universal pursuit.
Dónde Habitan los Ángeles- Claudia Celis

I can’t remember a book that has made me cry more than this one. Maybe it is the emotions and feelings of a kid who all that needed was care and love. And the await, the await for his mom. This book is not available in English (for what I know it has not been translated).
Well, so this is it. I am sure many other books have been key to my professional and personal development. These four are beyond rational thoughts, they are just part of me.
